Considering a National Divorce

This past week at American Thinker, both William Sullivan (another longtime regular contributor) and I addressed the idea of a national divorce; meaning, red and blue America separating. Sullivan’s article can be found here. Mine is here.

The differences between left and right in America are stark and, regrettably, growing starker. Some conservatives have floated the idea that a national divorce might be achieved civilly, if not amicably. In my American Thinker analysis, I argued that a civil separation isn’t likely to occur because of the nature and worldview of the American left. The American left isn’t led by the equivalent of Swedish social democrats who merely want to expand the welfare state and who are agreeable to living and let live … and who may gladly part company amicably if that was best for all concerned.

I argue that the left has no intention of dissolving the U.S. peaceful and fairly. That runs contrary to their explicit aims. Here’s the nub of the matter from my piece:

Why a civil divorce won’t happen — if a divorce comes at all — is that it fails to account for the opposition; that is, the hard left — Mark Levin’s aptly described “American Marxists” — who’d regard a friendly national divorce (or any divorce) as contrary to who and why they are.

I suggest that we defeat the leftist scourge menacing our country. At least at this juncture, I don’t think we have much of a choice given who we’re up against. To that end, Glenn Beck has articulated a collection of tactics that I believe are the start of an effective counter to the left’s anti-liberty aggression. Beck has a program devoted to addressing the idea of a national divorce. It’s here behind a paywall, but subscribe because it’s well worth watching (along with catching The Blaze’s other superb content).

To sum up Beck’s key points, he recommends:

  1. We don’t submit to or remain silent in the face of leftist lies. We need to always speak the truth, openly and proudly. Beck references the great Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, who said: “The simple step of a courageous individual is not to take part in the lie. One word of truth outweighs the world.”
  2. Patriotic America needs to build a parallel economy, along with alternative media, and society that is true to our morality, revolution, and founding. In other words, we patriots need our own powerbase which the left has no leverage over. All three areas are developing. Alternative medias is further along. A “red” economy is in its infancy and will grow, hopefully, more quickly than not. Money is definitely muscle. Society means patriots seeking out other patriots in existing communities or to create new ones. That’s happening through the migration of people from deep blue – failed – states like California and New York to Texas, Florida, and most states south and west. In sum, unity is power.
  3. Texas can’t go it alone. Red states need to unify and act as one, coordinating their responses and resistance to national government overreach and nascent tyranny.

William Sullivan argues that an amicable division of the nation won’t happen not because of right, but because of precedent. Here’s a cut from Sullivan’s analysis:

  • We are talking about secession. And secession, in America, is anything but a civil or amicable process, and it’s useless to imagine it would be otherwise.
  • It’s only truly been attempted once, after all, and it led to the bloodiest war in our history.
  • Certainly, there are practical differences between secession and civil war. But in America, these are distinctions without meaning, because with secession comes “civil war,” if one chooses, as we have, to characterize the American conflict of 1861-1865 that way.

The solution is to take back the country. That’s ambitious as hell, I know. It’s on par with climbing Everest – or seems so. But we all know the old saying, “A mountain always looks harder to climb from a distance.” That’s not to suggest that we be naïve or sanguine about the challenge. Yet, in life, very little worth achieving comes easily. Or to frame it in sports talk: “No pain, no gain.”

I’ll close with the final statement from my AT article:

Perhaps we should be bolder in our vision of America? Perhaps we should proclaim our commitment to the outright defeat of this leftist scourge and a restoration of liberty, a moral society, and honest government across this land — a restoration that will astound a watching world.

  1. Robert and anyone else interested,

For a really interesting fictionalized picture of this, get hold of Stephen Coonts’ book, Liberty’s Last Stand. Released in June 2016 — Coonts explores the “what if” of this and makes some interesting fictional prophecies, such as a Democrat president declaring martial law, Texas seceding, followed by other states including Alabama, the National Guard and many active duty military refusing to fight their fellow Americans, disruption of supplies, control of electric power and communications, and so on. Coonts takes some literary license of course but nonetheless a good read. https://www.coonts.com/libertys-last-stand.html

But although the wrongs get righted in the end, we should pray that this will only be fiction, and never ever a reality. The devastation would be unimaginable, and only as a last-ditch option that was better than the totalitarian alternative.
