NEWSFEED TUESDAY: Election of San Fran DA Points to Deepening Social Breakdown on Left

“We will not prosecute cases involving quality-of-life crimes,” he said. “Crimes such as public camping, offering or soliciting sex, public urination, blocking a sidewalk, etc., should not and will not be prosecuted. Many of these crimes are still being prosecuted; we have a long way to go to decriminalize poverty and homelessness.”

QUICK TAKE

Chesa Boudin is the new radical leftist district attorney of San Francisco. Boudin, whose parents are convicted members of the radical and violent Weather Underground, is the latest practical expression of the ongoing social breakdown in a once magnificent city. The San Francisco Police Officers Association and the San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association describe Boudin as a “dangerous choice” and “communist radical of sorts.”

The left has embraced societal deterioration and dissolution – and not just with Boudin’s election. Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles – all redoubts of left-wing politics – suffer unchecked homeless populations, rising crime rates, spreading filth and diseases, and abandonment by middle and working class citizens who can no longer tolerate growing squalor and crime. It’s not an overstatement to say that the left embraces a worldview that amounts to a collapse of Western civilizational values and mores.

Boudin was endorsed by Bernie Sanders and Black Lives Matter. He was opposed by the aforementioned police associations. Even elements in the San Francisco establishment opposed his election. The establishment’s candidate for DA, Suzy Loftus, lost badly.

Boudin’s parents are cop killers. From the New York Post, November 11, 2019:

Boudin was 14 months old when his parents, David Gilbert and Kathy Boudin, members of the domestic-terror group Weather Underground, dropped him off at a baby-sitter’s Oct. 2, 1981, and helped pull off the heinous heist in Nanuet in Rockland County.

Nyack police Sgt. Edward O’Grady and Officer Waverly “Chipper” Brown, as well as Brink’s guard Peter Paige, were killed in the robbery and its aftermath nearly four decades ago.

Is it unfair to say that the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree? No. We also learned from the Post report that Boudin was raised by the notorious “Underground leaders Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn in Chicago while his parents were shipped off to prison.”

Again, from the Post report: “He [Boudin] also once served as a translator for late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.” That’s the socialist caudillo who drove a once economically thriving Venezuela into poverty, misery, and strife.

Boudin’s mother was released from prison in 2003, after serving 22 years for her role in the robbery and killings. His father is still imprisoned. Kathy Boudin was hired by Columbia University to teach. What does that say about the moral perversity at Columbia?

Finally, this from City Journal, Autumn 2019:

For the last three decades, San Francisco has conducted a real-life experiment in what happens when a society stops enforcing bourgeois norms of behavior. The city has done so in the name of compassion toward the homeless. The results have been the opposite: street squalor and misery have increased, even as government expenditures have ballooned. Yet the principles that have guided the city’s homelessness policy remain inviolate: homelessness is a housing problem; it is involuntary; and its persistence is the result of inadequate public spending. These propositions are readily disproved by talking to people living on the streets. [Italics added]

The degeneration of San Francisco is a testament to a virtual religious adherence to a failing ideology. The increasingly horrid reality of San Francisco – the squalor produced by legions of drug and alcohol addicted and mentally ill homeless – is denied by affluent “progressives.” The growing crime and danger are rationalized away. Leftists are true believers. The grim facts and gritty realities in the streets of San Francisco will not alter their faith.
