“What I’m saying to Black America, we must stop victimizaton [sp]. We must stop complaining about what white folks have done to us in the past. We must go into ourselves, as Dr. King said, and find indelible ink — our own emancipation proclamation.”

Robert Woodson Interview, CNS News, May 12, 2015

THE TAKE

Black generational poverty is a fact. It’s persisted, if not increased, since Lyndon Johnson’s “Not-So-Great-Society” was launched in the mid-1960s. That seems contrary to common sense, but it isn’t. You must look deeper – to the facts and politics – to appreciate why Democrats’ policies and governance have failed poor blacks, spectacularly.

Well in excess of $15 trillion of taxpayer money has been spent by governments since the 60s to fight poverty. Much of that money has been allocated to help poor blacks. But to no avail. “Epic fail” is an understatement.

The ugly truth behind black generational poverty is the politics of acquiring and holding power. That’s Democrats playing a cynical political game for decades. Cities are Democrat turf. They’ve been that way forever, it seems. The black underclass is a dependent constituency. They’re a readymade and reliable voting bloc. Democrat ward heelers see to it. Poor black constituencies also assure that the federal dollars spigot stays open.

Federal and state taxpayer largess helps pay salaries for politicians and bureaucrats who have loyalty to one party. Community organizers – like Barack Obama was – get their share, too. Democrats stay in business by maintaining the status quo. Underclass blacks are acceptable collateral damage in Democrats’ wealth and power equations.

Since the George Floyd killing in Minneapolis, poor blacks have rioted and looted in major cities across the nation. Yes, young, white leftist radicals – ANTIFA – and young, black leftists – Black Lives Matter – have agitated to intensify the lawlessness. “Never let a crisis go to waste,” they say. Left-wing agitation may intensify urban crises, but absent the left’s prodding, would there be no riots and looting?

Hardly. Blacks mired in poverty; lacking families (and fathers); relying on welfare checks; uneducated and unskilled, thanks to dismal public schools; menaced by black on black crime, including gangbangers, and drug world kingpins and their mobs … have few prospects. Tomorrow will be much like to today: an ominous, gray shuffle … lives fraught with dangers and mayhem.

George Floyd’s killing was the spark that ignited raging forest fires.

But here’s the takeaway and ugly truth: While white progressive Democrats work to refocus the ransacking of their cities as black anger expressed against “400 years of racism” among white Americans, it’s really a lashing out at ceaseless despair, fostered by the very same Democrats – and allied black elites – who pontificate about collective white guilt.

Democrats claims are propaganda. Admitting the ugly truth of their failure in city after city would end their rule. Millions of black lives wasted over decades of Democrat control would be – should be – millstones around their necks, dooming them to the bottom of American society’s seas.

As George Gilder pointed out in his now classic study, Wealth and Poverty, poor blacks were faring better prior to the big anti-poverty pushes by LBJ and other liberals in the 1960s. Many more underclass black families were intact. Schools educated well enough. Poor blacks could gain skills and access to jobs in businesses in their communities. Life wasn’t ideal, but there were pathways out of poverty and misery, and with them, rays of hope.

From the Times-News, January 4, 2019:

Malcolm X said: “The worst enemy that the Negro have is this white man that runs around here drooling at the mouth professing to love Negros and calling himself a liberal, and it is following these white liberals that has perpetuated problems that Negros have. If the Negro wasn’t taken, tricked or deceived by the white liberal, then Negros would get together and solve our own problems. I only cite these things to show you that in America, the history of the white liberal has been nothing but a series of trickery designed to make Negros think that the white liberal was going to solve our problems. Our problems will never be solved by the white man.” [italics added]

Malcom X saw with remarkable clarity the re-enslavement of blacks that came with white progressive Democrats oft-claimed compassion and generosity. Practically, progressives have proven to be the successors of, first, pro-slavery Democrats, and then KKK and Jim Crow Democrats. Progressive enslavement is more insidious, though. In the names of love and compassion, poor blacks suffer greatly, while those who rule profit handsomely.
