The opening of a criminal investigation is likely to raise alarms that Mr. Trump is using the Justice Department to go after his perceived enemies. Mr. Trump fired James B. Comey, the F.B.I. director under whose watch agents opened the Russia inquiry, and has long assailed other top former law enforcement and intelligence officials as partisans who sought to block his election.

Quick Take
Democrats and the mainstream media are scared. The criminal investigation opened up by Attorney General William Barr threatens to peel back and expose the conspiracy to destroy Candidate and then President Donald Trump. Revelations threaten Democrats on the cusp of the 2020 elections.
The investigation may lead to former President Barack Obama. It’s a principal reason the New York Times was quick to suggest the fledgling query as political payback. The Times knows otherwise, but its dutifully running interference for its Democrat allies.
The federal prosecutor leading the effort is John Durham, who has a reputation as fair, fearless, and dogged. If Durham’s investigation leads to indictments – particularly of high-profile Obama administration appointees – it tarnishes Obama and his administration. More critically for Democrats, once independent voters grasp the magnitude and gravity of the conspiracy, it swings votes to the GOP.
The conspiracy involves elements of the FBI, CIA, the National Intelligence Agency, and Barack Obama’s Justice Department. Most of the conspirators were higher up at their agencies and the DOJ. Some at the CIA have supposedly lawyered up already. Notables are John Brennan, former CIA Director, James Clapper, former National Intelligence director, former FBI director James Comey, and former DOJ deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein. All are in the Durham’s sights.
If the investigation yields criminal charges, it thoroughly vindicates the president in his relentless assertions that efforts were made to frame him. The Obama administration in coordination with Hillary Clinton’s campaign are prime suspects in making the conspiracy and orchestrating it.
More damning is if former president Barack Obama is implicated – if evidence and testimonies lead to him approving actions against Trump.
Were there rogue elements at the FBI, CIA, and DOJ that hatched the plot to waylay Trump? That strains credulity. Obama attempting to help Hillary Clinton’s election are very plausible.
Former presidents aren’t exempt from criminal charges. But even if Obama is only implicated, it ruins his legacy. It damages the Democrats’ brand ahead of the 2020 elections.
The betting here is that Obama will have enough layers of denial to avoid criminal charges. But the evidence will point at him from many different directions. Obama may escape legal consequences, but not the fallout to his reputation.
Durham’s criminal investigation of the conspiracy against Trump will be painstaking. Due process will be assiduously adhered to. It should be. This is no Star Chamber effort, like Adam Schiff and Democrats are conducting. The Schiff examination is, in large part, an attempt by Democrats to get ahead of the DOJ investigation… to cut it off at the pass politically.
The wheels of justice grind slowly, but grind they will. Democrats and the MSM know this. They’re dreading the consequences.
