President Trump announced Wednesday that conditions have been met between Turkey and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) for what he called a “permanent ceasefire” between the two sides and that the United States is lifting sanctions on Ankara that were implemented following the invasion of northern Syria.

QUICK TAKE

It was carrots and sticks that resolved the conflict in Northern Syria. Republicans and Democrats were pressing Trump for stepped up military action there. But the president used a combination of negotiations, sanctions, and incentives to avert hostilities.

Most Americans weary of the nation’s endless overseas engagements will hail the president’s success. DC’s war party is sour. The war party are Democrats, Republicans, military bureaucrats, and lobbies that have political and financial motives for a U.S military response in Northern Syria.

From NPR, October 23, 2019:

The move to rescind sanctions on Turkey is already getting pushback from some lawmakers.

Republican Sen. Mitt Romney — a frequent Trump critic — blasted the decision.

“It’s unthinkable that Turkey would not suffer consequences for malevolent behavior which was contrary to the interests of the United States and our friends,” Romney tweeted.

But Sen. Rand Paul praised Trump for winning the peace and avoiding American casualties in Syria’s bloody fighting.

From Fox News, October 23, 2019:

Appearing on “America’s Newsroom” with host Bill Hemmer, Paul said it was “amazing” that “we actually have a realignment in Turkey, in Syria, that may actually lead to peace for the first time in eight years.”

If the president was Barack Obama making this peace, the mainstream media praise for him would be lavish and unending.

Instead, The Daily Beast, a propaganda organ for Democrats and the left, cynically claimed that the president’s aim was “plunder-driven.” It’s all about Trump ceding the contest to the Russians and Turks in exchange for oil, charges Beast writer Spencer Ackerman. Is it any surprise that Ackerman didn’t charge Trump with rolling over for Russia because he’s Putin’s puppet?

Give it a day or two for another variation of the Russia collusion fraud to rear its ugly head.
