The U.S. has No Obligation to Liberate Iran

So, I have a piece running at American Thinker today. If you have a few minutes, check it out. The takeaway is this:

In the main, Americans favor ending Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions even if that requires limited military action. They prefer negotiations to work, though. But they don’t want another regime change war. Not in Iran, not anywhere. No more occupations. They’ve seen enough blood spilled and treasure squandered in Iraq, Afghanistan, and long distant Vietnam — all fruitless and costly ventures.

Older and now current polling is clear: Americans don’t want the Iranians to possess nuclear weapons. They rightly view such as a threat to U.S. national security. They’ll tolerate or accept limited military action to destroy or cripple Iran’s nuclear weapons program, but they want nothing to do with a regime change war. Who does? Have failures in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam – the latter two catastrophic – taught us nothing?

Moreover, it didn’t require a lot of deep research to learn that the President of the United States opposes regime change wars. Donald Trump has been thoroughly consistent in his opposition to toppling governments and nation-building exercises. Both are championed by neocons, who haven’t met a war they didn’t want the U.S. involved in.

Neocons love cloaking U.S. interventions that they push in high moral tones. We have to “protect democracy” is one of their favorites. Like in Ukraine, where “democracy” doesn’t look much like democracy. After suspending elections, among other anti-liberty actions, Zelenskyy performs like an authoritarian.

Or, we have a moral obligation to “liberate” enslaved peoples. No, we don’t. As the founders proclaimed – particularly Washington – our obligation is to be a light in a dark world. There are a lot of bad players across the globe. The U.S. is supposed to hopscotch from country to country fighting wars of liberation? At what costs? There aren’t enough challenges at home? How many parents must bury their sons and daughters to serve these endless, “noble” causes?

More practical minded neocons claim it’s in America’s national security interests to fight the enemy in Afghanistan, for example. It saves Americans from fighting enemies here at home. Since Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, where in the U.S. have there been pitched battles with the Taliban? We’ve been hearing that balderdash since Vietnam.

No doubt about it, America’s leaders have a principal obligation to protect the homeland from threats, foreign and domestic. But not from ginned up threats. America shouldn’t be in the business of wars of aggrandizement. Its fighting men and women aren’t fodder for military brass to buff-up their resumés. The U.S. shouldn’t go to war to increase revenue streams for defense contractors.

If you don’t believe me, listen to Donald Trump and talk to your friends and neighbors.

How to Stop Iran’s Assassination Attempts on Trump

By J Robert Smith

Tuesday night on X, former President Trump issued a statement that the Iranians have made failed attempts on his life. He said they’re expected to keep at it. “Not a good situation,” wrote Trump. Not only do the Iranians fear Trump’s election, but they want to disrupt the autumn elections. True election interference is in the works. Here’s Trump’s statement in its entirety.

NBC News reported on Tuesday night:

“President Trump was briefed earlier today by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence regarding real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an effort to destabilize and sow chaos in the United States,” spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement.

“Intelligence officials have identified that these continued and coordinated attacks have heightened in the past few months, and law enforcement officials across all agencies are working to ensure President Trump is protected and the election is free from interference.”

Of course, we wonder if the Biden administration has the backbone to sic the dogs on the Iranians. The only way to deal with a nation that sponsors terrorist outfits across the globe is harshly, unforgivingly. The Iranians should be told in no uncertain terms to call back their assassins or assassination teams. If not, we’ll deploy our own teams or set in motion other means of decapitating Iran’s leadership.

Mossad (Israel’s intelligence service) is widely suspected to have killed Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh while he was attending the swearing in of Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, in Teheran. Per CNN, Haniyeh was killed “using an explosive device that had been covertly hidden in the guest house where he was staying [.]”

If the Israelis can reach into Iran to kill a high-ranking Hamas leader, they could kill members of Iran’s leadership. U.S. leaders should make the Iranians aware that they’ll work with the Israelis (and others) to kill their leaders if assassination efforts aimed at Trump – or any other American politician – don’t cease immediately. Violence – or the threat of it – is the only language the mullahs understand.

Two Fools: Tlaib and Graham

By J Robert Smith

Last week, after Hamas attacked Israeli civilians, welcomed words of sympathy and support poured forth for Israel from Americans. Prominent Americans doing so included politicians, of course, though a good many Democrats were mute. Their quiet was reminiscent of 2020, when BLM and Antifa stoked “George Floyd” riots ran riot in Democrat-run cities. Silence is a form of consent.

Some, like Rashida Tlaib, a Detroit congresswoman – and notoriously, vehemently anti-Israel – couldn’t bring herself to answer a simple question from Fox News reporter Hillary Vaughn about those valiant Hamas terrorists butchering Israeli infants. Why, a five-year-old would have had no difficulty condemning such an act. But for Tlaib, judging by her silence, the question was fraught with circuit-overloading complexity. Or maybe it was just a case of quiet approval?

In the last couple of days, under withering criticism – and a possible House censure vote – Tlaib is backpedaling. But, heck, we kinda really knew where her heart is, and it ain’t with dead innocent Jews.

We had no trouble anticipating how Tlaib, Omar, AOC – and the other fools who make up the ridiculous Squad – would react to Hamas atrocities. Nor did we expect neocons – of a GOP stripe – to respond in any other way than calling for war.

Mind you, the Israelis have never asked the U.S. to fight it’s wars. They’ve asked for the means to fight, which we’ve gladly provided, but not for American boots on the ground. The military industrial complex isn’t complaining. Arms sales are profit. Israel eviscerating Hamas is a good and necessary thing, no question. American support is a plus.

But arm sales or not, neocons want in on the action. That would be young Americans dying in a conflict somewhere. Since Iran backs Hamas – financially, with weapons, and training – they’re focusing on warring with Iran.

The biggest mouth among the neocons – South Carolina Republican senator Lindsey Graham – wants war with Iran; he’s blustering about it a lot. War – any war, anywhere – is his default position, actually. Rev up the tanks and let the missiles fly, be that toward Russia, China, Iran, or fill in the blank. Graham is open to suggestions.

Not getting a major war with Russia – to date, anyway – has frustrated neocons in both parties. Hillary Clinton and Democrats have had a weird Russia obsession for nearly a decade. The sinister Russians have been the cause of everything bad in the Democrats universe, they bleat incessantly. The reptilian Hillary lost the presidency in 2016 because Donald Trump colluded with Vlad Putin. Yeah, and aliens want to abduct Bill and Hillary. Maybe little green men are conspiring with Putin, too?
