What Muslim Ban?

Supporters of a leftist, pro-government, anti-freedom agenda are in charge in Washington. They control both the legislative and executive branches and hold all important leadership positions in the Democratic Party. Their top priorities are policies that are not necessarily popular with the American people but are essential dogma for the far left.

Examples abound, but consider just one: their border policy. Americans don’t support open borders. Yet Democratic leaders have chosen not to enforce immigration laws, to welcome illegals without conducting background checks, do not determine if they are political refugees, do not test them for COVID, and relocate them in communities across the country.

Florida alone was the destination of more than 70 government flights, in the dark of night, unscheduled and unannounced, moving in illegal aliens collected at the border. The Biden Administration does not even notify local officials or coordinate with them. If that doesn’t constitute an “open border,” then the term has no meaning.

Faith in Government Led to COVID Failures

By Rob Meyne

Someday, the full story of COVID’s effect on America will be written. If it is compiled competently, and truthfully, it will describe some successes but also a ton of mixed messages, censorship, policy reversals, selective reliance on “science,” and assaults on our rights.

There may be debates about the effectiveness of how we responded to COVID, but there is no dispute it was an astonishingly draconian assertion of governmental power and control over our lives. You will recall President Trump grudgingly accepted the need for “15 days to flatten the curve,” which led to a near-complete shutdown of our economy and normal life. At the same time, he endorsed strategies to protect those who were at greatest risk and initiated Project Warp Speed to develop a vaccine in record time.

Following that initial period, and nearly alone among our leaders, President Trump urged a quick return to normal life. Predictably, the state and local governments, as well as federal regulators, who managed our COVID response fell in love with lockdowns and mandates, and they continued long after the President supported them.

If you rely on your memory, rather than mainstream media, you may recall Biden and Harris both discouraged people from getting a vaccine. Astonishingly, today’s preferred media/Democratic Party narrative is that President Trump and his supporters are anti-vaccine Neanderthals, whose reticence is keeping COVID alive. Quite the contrary: President Trump led development of a vaccine, has promoted it, got the vax himself, and the groups with the lowest vaccination rates are Blacks and Hispanics, groups that generally vote Democratic.

Anti-Intellectuals

Especially as a young man, I enjoyed spending hours reading books and short stories written by Isaac Asimov. His writings were adventurous and scientifically (for the most part) possible. He was an endorser of technology that brought more jobs by the end of the 20th century than we had people at the beginning of the century. He appealed to the economist in me.

Asimov wrote (Newsweek, January 21, 1980; re-posted on Medium: “A Cult of Ignorance”) an article critical of people who considered college professors and other highly educated people to be elitists. Snobs. He cited a few examples of famous people who denigrated college professors. It seemed like a good point, especially to a young college professor.

Today, I hear disdain for those who are unvaccinated. They are described as “misinformed” or “ignorant.” They should follow the science. (Which apparently means they should follow Tony Fauci, who says “I am science.”) Yet, recent reports from the CDC showed about 30% of healthcare workers have not been vaccinated. This includes many doctors and nurses that logic says would have some knowledge of science (even if not of “Fauci-science”).

A U.S. Senator Honors Communists: Guess Who?

By J. Robert Smith

  • Dec. 14, 2021
  • 2-min read

Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal is helping his state’s communist party celebrate it’s 102nd birthday. As the old saying goes, “Show me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are.”

So, Blumenthal would swear he isn’t a commie, but, heck, he definitely has sympathies.

From American Greatness, December 13:

“Blumenthal stipulated that while one doesn’t have “to agree with anyone and everyone” and every party, he was happy “to honor the great tradition of activism and standing up for individual workers that is represented by the three honorees here.”

And to give you a sense of the moral sewer that “Progressivism” has tumbled into, and the disinterest or deliberate ignoring of communism’s evil and destructive impact on the world over the past century, Blumenthal actually suggested to those gathered for the Connecticut Communist Party’s party that – Shh!!! – Republicans are the real threat to liberty and God-given rights.

Again from the American Greatness article:

“Blumenthal told the attendees that the enemies of Communism (Republicans) are trying to ‘restrict Democracy.’

“Our opponents are trying to restrict Democracy. They are threatening the right to vote in state after state, congressional district after district all around the country, and the John Lewis Voting rights Act,” he complained. The senator called any restrictions on voting undemocratic, and vowed to fight against them.”

No matter that the history is irrefutable: Communists (and let’s throw in their kissing cousins, fascists) killed an estimated 100 million people from the start of the 1917 Russian Revolution forward. Communists crushed hundreds of millions of lives though unceasing oppression. It is, without a doubt, the greatest evil unleashed in human history. One can almost characterize it as “satanic.”

For Dick Blumenthal – who lied about his service in Vietnam, by the way – to honor and celebrate communists is on par with honoring and celebrating Nazis.

But that’s no longer shocking from progressive Democrats nowadays.

A War with Russia?
Over the Ukraine?
Good Heavens, Why?

By J. Robert Smith

The Ukraine is in Russia’s crosshairs. Vladimir Putin is massing troops, weapons, and equipment along the Ukrainian border. Putin doesn’t want Ukraine to become part of NATO or align with it in any way. He regards that as a direct threat to Russia.

Democrats, neocons, and military contractors are squawking. “We can’t let Russia invade the Ukraine,” they cry. “We must slap sanctions on Russia, make Putin and his fellow oligarchs feel pain,” they say with blood in their eyes. “And if all else fails, the U.S. needs to intervene militarily. Send troops! Bomb Russia!”

Anyone outside the DC establishment think this is sheer madness? Must we explain why a rush to confrontation and conflict with the Russians is folly?

Proving that the contemporary madness plaguing our society isn’t exclusive to Democrats and the left, Mississippi GOP senator Roger Wicker isn’t ruling out nuclear war over the developing Ukrainian crisis.

The Left’s Favorite Issues

By Rob Meyne

  • Dec. 7, 2021
  • 3-min read

Every Washington solution currently being offered, by the Party that controls the legislative and executive branches, would give more power to government. They all call for a bigger role for government in controlling our lives and the economy, and, by definition, less individual freedom.

If you want to fully understand what is happening on two issues, which you hear about daily, all you need to do is remember who is in charge and what they want. Call them leftists, socialists, progressives, or whatever, they all favor more government and less freedom. So, they enthusiastically champion issues that give them an excuse to implement expensive governmental programs.

Two “dream” issues for the left are COVID and climate. They provide perfect excuses for governmental, corporate, and non-profit elites to do exactly what they have always wanted. These issues also allow them to say, “it is for our own good, the future of the world is at stake, and we if we save even one life,” etc. The left loves to condescend to us, and to criticize anyone who dares to disagree with them. If you have a different opinion, according to them, you are not just mistaken, you are vile, filthy, and evil. They don’t usually even bother to criticize our opinions. They find it more effective to just vilify us.

If you believe the leftist/socialist agenda just happens to be what we need to combat climate change, or to handle COVID, then you are, with respect, naïve beyond belief.

Smashing and Grabbing
Blue America into Ruin

By J. Robert Smith

The recent spate of brazen organized store lootings in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and surroundings aren’t the beginning of societal unraveling in those places, but the latest manifestations. They represent a new stage and an acceleration. It’s no accident that this mayhem is lopsidedly centered in blue strongholds.

Note that these smash-and-grab robberies aren’t confined to poor neighborhoods in big blue cities, but have spread to middle-class and upscale areas — areas frequented or inhabited by the affluent, (mostly) white progressives who have favored defunding police and emptying prisons.

Their virtue-signaling about equity and justice is well and good until they become victims — or, at least, feel threatened. The chickens are coming home to roost throughout blue America, to amend Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s famous dictum.

“Fakebook” is Determined to
Destroy Free Speech

By Rob Meyne

We recently heard a story of a Chinese national who was discussing the news media. She said most Chinese people are surprised at how many Americans continue to pay attention to the mainstream media.

She said nearly all Chinese (clearly an opinion, not necessarily provable) simply don’t pay attention to their media. They understand it is all useless and biased information, controlled by the Chinese Communist Party.

Of course, they are right. All Chinese media, as well as corporations and local governments, are controlled by the CCP. Nothing of significance happens in China that isn’t approved of, or directed by, the Party.

As she observed, mainstream American media also effectively follow the “Party line.” It is barely more objective than Chinese media. The exact method by which the American media is controlled differs from China, but the effect does not. It is difficult, bordering on impossible, for reporters or editors in the U. S. today to report news, or express opinion, that differs from the narratives promoted by leftists, Democratic leaders, and corporate media.

The Inflationary Train Wreck Ahead

By Dr. Robert Scott

Economics has been called “the science of scarcity” and “the dismal science.” While a lot of my peers may take offense to that description, it is economists who are called on to analyze data, predict the future, and share our conclusions, however rosy or gloomy they may be.

Sometimes the information we have before us is so compelling there is only one way to interpret it. Today is such a time. As I look at key indicators, it is hard to escape the conclusion that we are headed toward some very dramatic events.

It reminds me of an incident experienced by my uncle, Bill Cook, back in the 1930’s. The images he shared were just as stark as the economic future that looms ahead today.

Bill Cook left Iowa for Reno, Nevada where he spent his life. He made a living as a railroad man. He was the engineer on freight trains; the huge ones that went on and on and fascinated me as a boy.

About twenty years ago he told me about a time he was involved in a massive train wreck. Another train, which came from behind his, was engineered by a man who had many years on passenger trains but very little experience with freight trains. The difference is huge. Freight cars typically carry many tons while passenger cars are comparatively light.

Lacking understanding of (and respect for) the care needed on a long downgrade, the passenger trainman went into it too fast. Realizing he needed to slow down, he made a fatal mistake. He slammed on his air brakes – an action that caused all the air pressure to be released. That left him with no braking power.

Bill could see the other train coming, so tried to pull his train off onto a siding. It rapidly became clear the collision was unavoidable. Try as he would to avoid it, the second train hit the back of his. Fortunately, for Bill, he was far enough forward that he was not injured. But the wreckage behind him was massive.

The men on the second train were doomed. Bill said it was impossible to imagine the sight of two 80-ton diesel engines colliding and being tossed into the air. The back of the first engine was almost vertical up against the front of the second, which was also almost vertical. Railroad car after car crashed. The remains of the engineer of the second train were gathered up in a shoe box.

Bill was later exonerated of any responsibility for the event; but he never forgot what he saw and the feeling of impending doom as he watched the unfolding of an unstoppable disaster.

When I watch the current economic situation, I have something like the feeling my uncle did.

As an economist, I am aware of a simple rule from one of the twentieth century’s great minds – Milton Freidman. Inflation tends to be the difference between the rate of growth of the money supply and the real (inflation adjusted) rate of growth of output. (For example, growing the money supply at a 5% rate, with GDP growing at a real rate of 3.5%, causes inflation of about 1.5%.)

Since about 1960, the money supply (called M2 by the Fed) has been increasing at a little less than 7% per year. Over that same period, inflation adjusted GDP has been increasing at about a 3% rate. Inflation over the same period has averaged about 3.7%. Given other influences (lesser) on inflation, that’s close enough for me.

In the last 18 months, the money supply has been increased by about 31%. That’s more than 20% per year! The fastest GDP (adjusted for inflation) grew since 1960 is 7.2%. If we hit that high mark again (and that is very unlikely), inflation would be about 13%!

That’s not the worst of it. Over the long-term, interest rates tend to run about 3% more than the rate of inflation. You do the math. Extremely high interest rates bring the train wreck of falling housing values and downward pressure on stock values (the basis of a huge amount of retirement funds). The inflation train is on the downhill side of the mountain. You can see the collision coming – but it may already be too late to get off the tracks!

What Biden’s Nomination of Saule
Omarova to be Comptroller of the Currency Tells Us

By J Robert Smith

  • Nov. 24, 2021
  • 1-min read

Not long ago, who would have believed that an American president would nominate a communist for an important U.S. Treasury job? Not a “I’ve seen the light” repentant communist, like Whittaker Chambers, but a person who must believe that the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union was fake, like the moon landings that tinfoil-hatters swear never happened.

Joe Biden is the president and Saule Omarova is the communist — or communist sympathizer, depending on reports. Then again, Omarova disavows being a Bolshevik. Easier to slip through the confirmation process with a disavowal, possibly. In any event, Omarova isn’t exactly a small government, free-market sort. Her positions are radical. Marxism (aka communism) isn’t a dirty word among Democrats and progressives nowadays.

Rounding out Omarova’s resumé: shoplifting, which is fitting in that communism is a form of organized thievery. Stalin committed crimes, too.

Once upon a time in America, there would have been collective outrage at plucking a communist or fellow traveler for any role in our government. You see, communism is antithetical to a free society. It’s darkness to our light. But in those bygone days, Americans — Republicans and Democrats — were reared to embrace liberty and the core beliefs that made freedom possible. Yes, we had differences, but we shared a culture rooted in traditional values.
